In the 1500s, European explorers arrived in Texas in search of gold and glory. But, the explorers quickly realized that people were already living in the land they thought they had discovered. The Spanish were the first Europeans to arrive. They looked for gold and tried to convert American Indians to Christianity. But in 1685, a French explorer named La Salle arrived to the region. Suddenly, Texas took center stage in a competition between European powers.
