Abandoned by her husband, Emily Coleman lives alone with her son on an isolated ranch, forced there by debts and enemies who want her land. Emily is forced to pass through Kansas to sell her livestock in the dangerous Dodge City in company of three men: the old Kirk, whom she has known since childhood, Indian gray cloud, and ambiguous Douglas.
